Filling the Void in Vaughan, Ontario

Filling the Void in Vaughan, Ontario Filling the Void in Vaughan, Ontario

This customer in Vaughan, Ontario, had the unlucky experience of Frost Heave ruining their front walkway. Unfortunately, frost heave is a common occurrence plaguing concrete all over the country. Rainwater and natural moisture sit in pockets underneath the concrete. Then in winter, these moisture pockets freeze and shift, over time affecting the earth around it and thus moving the concrete. The only way to prevent this is to backfill the concrete with a more robust material than soil, for example, gravel, that allows water to flow down and not sit.

The customer desperately wanted their beautiful stone footpath returned to its former glory, so thankfully, they got in touch with Project Manager Matt McCullough at Canadian Concrete Leveling for relief. After identifying the customer’s unique needs, developing a plan, and scheduling a date, our Installation Specialists got to work. Step one involves the application of our unique PolyLevel® system. It is not only exclusively designed to raise concrete in a quick, clean, and efficient way; it also secures the concrete in place to prevent any further frost heave damage. Then NexusPro® sealant, another one of our patented products, is applied to the seams and joints in the final stage of the installation process. NexusPro® has multiple different options to appeal to any customer's preference and style. In addition, our strong, proprietary sealant is designed to keep moisture from seeping down the seams and into the earth, thus further protecting the concrete from potential future heaving and shifting due to frost heave.

Double Sinking Staircases? Maple, Ontario

Double Sinking Staircases? Maple, Ontario

Double Sinking Staircases? Maple, Ontario Double Sinking Staircases? Maple, Ontario

Maple, Ontario’s beautiful home, had not one but two sinking sets of stairs. However, these stairs both had something in common: the rest of the stairs, except the top, had started sinking, leaving the final lunge to the top challenging. Not only did the homeowners find the staircases unappealing, but they also noticed that many people were tripping on them during all hours of the day.

The steps had a gap where the original sealant was, but since the steps elongated, the separation happened, revealing the foundation and concrete integrity. If the problem is not fixed and the elements get inside, further damage to the home’s foundation and the staircases will occur. The homeowners needed a solution that could quickly lift the concrete, save them money, and keep the concrete looking the same way it does now. They’ve come across Canadian Concrete Leveling and realized that we check every box they are looking for. As other methods can be expensive, our polyurethane injections are non-invasive, cost-effective, and quick curing to the point that it’s too good to be true.

They called our call centre to set up an appointment where Joe McColl, our experienced Project Manager, came up with a detailed schematic on how the work will be completed, who would be coming to the home and how long roughly it will take. Later during the week, Kyle McKeown, our Installation Supervisor, came to the house to start the injection process. The job only needed less than ten injections, which happened to be the size of a dime, to complete the work. Once the holes were properly filled with the polyurethane, the concrete lifted immediately. The area was then swept, and the holes were patched with concrete to blend in with the existing concrete.

Restoring Curb Appeal in Vaughan, Ontario

Restoring Curb Appeal in Vaughan, Ontario Restoring Curb Appeal in Vaughan, Ontario

There is one thing homeowners and potential homeowners hear all the time from builders, contractors, and realtors, and that word is curb appeal. Curb appeal is essential not only to impress guests and neighbors but also to increase the value of your home. Also, curb appeal is effectively the first impression anyone experiences with a home, and a negative impact can be costly.

Curb appeal, simply put, is the exterior front face of your house and property. It is the first thing anyone sees when walking or driving by. It can make or break the resale of your home, and it can have a profound negative effect on the perceived value of your estate. Real estate professionals worldwide stress the importance to anyone owning their home to maintain a positive curb appeal. Not only will it increase the value of your home but also your neighbors living around you. Curb appeal is a crucial concept for every homeowner to grasp for economic reasons, but aesthetically pleasing designs also reduce stress and can increase positive overall wellbeing.

A customer in Vaughan, Ontario, had the unfortunate experience of having their front walkway crack and shift from its original position. Not only was the curb appeal of their house on the line, but the walkway was also so severely off level it became a hazard. With unpredictable and slippery weather being a cruel reality in Canada, any small tripping hazard has the potential to become highly unsafe to any poor, unsuspecting soul.

Committed to keeping homes beautiful but, more importantly, keeping people safe, Canadian Concrete Leveling was contacted to get the job done giving the customer peace of mind. As a result, Canadian Concrete Leveling implemented two unique patented technologies to ensure positive curb appeal for years to come.

PolyLevel® was applied first to bring the large concrete slabs back to level. Then the installation team used NexusPro® to seal the concrete slabs back together. This color-matched seal prevents moisture from accumulating down into the cracks. The customer was satisfied having one less thing to have to worry about.

Job Stories From Maple, ON
Double Stair Sinking, Maple Ontario

Maple, Ontario, had two impressive concrete staircases, but both had similar issues regarding the top step. The top steps remained in their place but seemed to have been much larger compared to the rest. How can that be? The steps below it have settled, leaving the top piece up significantly. The concrete was in excellent condition and needed some lifting love to be looking great again.

Thankfully, the homeowners found Canadian Concrete Leveling at the top of their search results and knew we could provide the work they needed. Once the initial call to our call centre was made, we took action and sent one of our Project Managers, Joe McColl, to the home to provide the owners with a free detailed estimate. After a thorough inspection, Joe realized that small injections of our polyurethane would have to be done to the lowers steps, then progressing upwards. By doing this, the voids at the bottom will be filled to withstand the weight of the entire staircase. Once the inspection was complete, it was time for our installation supervisor to come in; Kyle McKeown. On a later day, Kyle arrived at the home and knew what he needed to do. He started by drilling tiny holes in the staircases and inserted pegs to attach our PolyLevel® system. Once the polyurethane machine is attached to the nozzle, it was time to feed the poly through and into the voids beneath the steps. With the quick expansion of the material, the steps lifted rapidly before the homeowner’s eyes. Once the levelling was done on both staircases, the sealant needed to be applied. Our NexusPro™ is a high-grade sealant that is waterproof, anti-cracking, and chemical resistant so that it can be protected against all elements. The adhesive was applied to the joints in the stairs so that the settlement won’t return. The process took under half an hour which baffled the owners, thinking that they would need to move their patio furniture, plants, and rugs out of the way all day. However, the curing process was almost immediate, and the cleanup was immaculate. Steps are back to normal!

Doing it Right on the Right Side of Town

Shifting and heaving concrete slabs are most commonly doing so because of some pressure pushing from underneath. Although not entirely very well known, frost heave is a common issue for any building in the Northern Hemisphere. Brutal, cold winter nights are to blame. Over time, small cracks at the joints and seams will slowly fail, allowing for moisture to seep down into the ground underneath. Due to the very nature of water and ice, when these moisture pockets freeze, thaw and repeat, it moves the earth around it. This earth has nowhere to go but up, pushing on the concrete from underneath. And since the concrete has nowhere to go either, it cracks, shifts and heaves, creating an off-level, hazardous unusable walkway. Unassuming guests and neighbours could now be the next potential victim of a fall.

America's Cold Harsh Hat

Over years and cold, harsh winters, concrete will inevitably fail and begin to shift from its original place. These slabs then exert more force on the surrounding concrete creating a ripple effect of damage and destruction. Untreated, the slabs will eventually pop and shift to an extreme degree and cause dips and lips to appear in the walkway; it opens the door for the potential for injury and lawsuits to any homeowner. Not only is it a safety concern but the overall long-term health of your home may be at stake. If you have any concerns regarding your home’s foundation, garage floor, or concrete walkways, don’t hesitate to call us for more information and to set up a client consultation with one of our highly qualified Project Managers.

Unsafe Patio Slab Fixed, Maple, ON

A home in Maple, Ontario, had a problem located at the front entrance of the home. The front patio and walkway had been sinking over the past few years leaving the area had various gaps and trip hazards in the concrete. When the concrete patio was poured the substrate was not properly compacted/compressed. Over time the weight of the concrete has further compressed the loose substrate leading to the sinking and cracking in the patio. The customer was concerned that the area would continue to settle and would make the area very unsafe to use. The customer was also worried that the slabs would begin to push apart making the problem harder to solve.

The customer called Canadian Concrete Leveling and spoke to John DiNicolantonio who explained everything about the job. Billy McKeown and the team came in and used our PolyLevel Foam System and NexusPro Joint Sealant. Our PolyLevel Foam System is injected beneath the concrete to lift and level the slabs. Our expanding foam compresses the substrate and then lifts the concrete, thus ensuring that the area is protected from further settlement. The NexusPro is installed post-lift to ensure that the area is further protected from water saturation.

The customer was very satisfied that we were able to remove all of the trip hazards in the walkway. They were also very pleased that we sealed the gap that was forming between the patio and walkway as it was quite the eyesore.
